Finding the Right Touch for Your Home
Not everyone wants to find an antique for their home. While antiques are perfectly great pieces and can look great in many types of décor, there are times when modern furniture is more appropriate and can be far easier to find and to maintain. Families with young children and teenagers for instance might feel more comfortable with a more modern type of furniture over antiques that can so often be more delicate and prone to damage. Do you really want to put an antique fainting couch in your living room if you have a sixteen-year-old linebacker and a four-year-old budding gymnast?
Antique Furniture Means More
Antique furniture does mean more—more ornamentation, more places for dust and dirt to get trapped in and more care. It can also mean more worry and more fretting and finally, it can mean more floor space. Today’s homes are much smaller than they were before back in the days of ten to fifteen people living in each house. Families are smaller so homes got smaller, but furniture stayed the same size. An antique china cabinet may be a gorgeous piece, but if your home does not have a dining room and it won’t fit into your kitchen, then it does you no good at all.
Buying modern furniture allows you to stick to simple, clean lines that are easier to maintain and easier to fit into the available space. A simple neutral sofa can fit into virtually any décor and color scheme while a specifically colored antique may need to go into only a few color schemes to look right.
Modern Furniture Is Timeless
The timelessness of modern furniture means that you will not have to continually keep updating your furniture. You will have the ability to design a room around the main pieces, especially if they have a spare and unassuming element to them. A black and metal piece can fit into virtually any room and can be moved from place to place as you need. Antique furniture typically fills a particular need and only that need. If you can only have a piece in one room or in one spot in that room, you are stuck—never able to update and change things around to keep them fresh and feeling new.
Modern Furniture Is Easier to Care For
One of the considerations you should keep in mind when buying furniture of any kind is how you will need to take care of it. For instance, if you have to use a special polish and cloth to clean it, you might consider a different type of furniture. Modern furniture is typically made of materials that are easier to care for and keep looking good for many years. They are protected from stains and wear and tear so that you can relax and actually sit on them without worry.
