Fine Furniture: Care and Keeping

fine-furniture-ohioYou spend hours, maybe days choosing the right, fine furniture. You have it delivered and fret over every second until it is set down in the room it is meant to be in. you fuss over its exact placement. There is nothing more special or satisfying than that first moment when you step back and admire the appearance of the room that you have worked so hard to create. But you don’t do all of that work nor pay all of that money for just that one moment.

Your furniture is meant to last for a long time. To make sure that your fine furniture stays looking as good as it does at this very moment, it is important that you care for it correctly. There are different ways to care for different items; it all starts with looking at what your furniture is made of.

Not All Fine Furniture Is Created Equally (Or With the Same Materials)

Mellowed mahogany tables and chair sets grace the dining room; a cherry table sits in the foyer. You have beautiful, fine furniture in every room of the house and unless you have used the same decorating theme for the entire home, the furniture is different from room to room to room. You can’t just grab a single cleanser or cleaning method and use it haphazardly on the different pieces of furniture. A wood furniture polish will cloud glass and stain marble. A leather cleaning product will stain and ruin suede furniture. You can’t just run a vacuum over the top of a table and be done with it.

Before you buy furniture, make sure that you know what it is made of and how it is best cared for. If the process is too much for you, then it might be better to choose a different style of furniture. Ask the sales staff for their recommendations for fine furniture care as well.

Don’t fall victim to some of the so-called “hints” that abound on the internet. Just as you cannot lose weight eating nothing but cabbage soup, you should not trust that rubbing a lemon on your fine furniture is always a good idea.

Protection Is Key to Caring for Your Fine Furniture

It is easier to prevent a stain than to remove it. It is easier to keep damages from happening than to have them removed. That being said, it is impossible to prevent every single mishap from happening during the life of your fine furniture; however, you can take steps to make sure that damages are kept to a minimum. Approved furniture polish will keep dust from settling on the furniture and destroying its appearance. Know the potential threats that your fine furniture faces and try to make these less dangerous. Take care of all spills as soon as possible to keep them from becoming stains. Consider having a stain repelling protective coating placed on textiles for additional protection.
